A “RED LETTER DAY” denotes a very special, happy and important day that is celebrated in a grand manner.
The origin of the saying is from medieval times when people wrote down normal days/dates on church calendar using black ink. Red ink was used to denote special holy says and festivals thereby bringing about the phrase.
For Public Bank Bhd, 2026 is going to be filled with plenty of red-letter days as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.
Founded by the late Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow in 1965, Public Bank has grown from its humble beginnings to become the largest bank in Malaysia by shareholders’ funds – second largest by market capitalisation – just behind Maybank and third largest by total assets behind Maybank and CIMB.
Kicking off the diamond jubilee jamboree on Jan 26, Public Bank held a 15-minute spectacle over Kuala Lumpur featuring 600 synchronised drones and projection mapping on Menara Public Bank.
Its headquarters was once again in the spotlight as city residents were treated to a fireworks display for the ages last night (Aug 6).
The public was alerted that something was special was about to take place through a series of teasers and suffice to say those who were in the vicinity of Menara Public Bank at the relevant times were well and truly gob smacked.
What KL-lites were treated to was a vibrant, exhilarating display of fireworks that lit up the city skyline in a manner befitting an Olympic Games opening. Yes, it was that spectacular and images posted by mesmerised Malaysians prove as much.
One such city dweller was @digimon_lfs who shared pictures of the Public Bank headquarters in full celebration mode on Threads.
The post has generated 46.2K likes, 896 comments, 3.5K reposts and 7.2 shares at the time of writing, denoting that the eye-catching display caught many netizens’ eyes.
The poster, like many others, were unaware of the planned celebrations and were caught off guard by the sudden loud explosions.
Thinking it was an accident or a mishap after attending Day 4 of the KL Fashion Week a.k.a. KLFW 2026 at KLCC, he quickly distanced himself from the source of the noise before seeing the vibrant fireworks display lighting up the night sky in his rear-view mirror!
A few others city dwellers were similarly caught by surprise by the sudden explosions and bursts of fire colouring the city vista.
POVs from all over KL were aplenty online as city folk shared pictures and clips taken from streets below, balconies across town and even from drones above!
Catching the breath of some commenters were the light displays that lit up the building, not least one featuring the image of the late founder who built the bank into one of the country’s most trusted brands.
Other planned anniversary festivities include a year-long campaign that will see 60 cars being given away to eligible contestants.
If getting public’s attention was the goal here, Public Bank has certainly succeeded with this fireworks bonanza. It was grand, vibrant and audacious befitting one of the the country’s largest financial institutions.
However, Public Bank has not publicly disclosed the exact cost of its 10-minute dazzle which some fireworks enthusiasts claimed could “burn beyond the million-ringgit range”.
