Shots fired in 30-minute car chase with cable thieves in KL

Police fired multiple gunshots during a 30-minute car chase involving two suspected cable thieves in Kuala Lumpur this morning that ended with one man captured and another escaping.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said the chase began at about 9.30am when officers patrolling the Kesas Highway spotted a suspicious green Ford Ranger.

“Police ordered the vehicle to stop, but the suspects sped away. One gunshot was then fired at the vehicle’s tyre,” he said in a statement.

A chase ensued at the Awan Besar toll plaza in the direction of Klang and continued to Sri Petaling before the Ford stopped near a petrol station in Sungai Besi. Policemen ordered the suspects to exit the vehicle, but they refused and attempted to ram the policemen.

“Five shots were fired at the vehicle’s tyre while the suspects drove into Jalan Hang Tuah 4 before losing control and crashing into a grey Mazda.

“After the vehicle stopped, a 29-year-old driver was arrested while the passenger managed to escape,” said Fadil.

A search of the vehicle uncovered stolen cables and tools believed to have been used for cable theft. Checks revealed the arrested suspect had 37 prior offences and was also wanted by the police.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving, as well as Sections 427 and 379 of the Penal Code for mischief and theft, respectively.

Police are tracking down the passenger and will seek a remand order for the arrested suspect tomorrow. - FMT
