AirAsia reschedules flights to Jakarta as volcanic ash closes airport

AirAsia has cancelled or rescheduled a number of flights to and from Jakarta, Indonesia, today as Soekarno-Hatta international airport suspended flight operations until 9.30am (10.30am in Malaysia) due to volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

The low-cost airline said volcanic ash posed a significant threat to aircraft safety, prompting operational adjustments to selected services whose flight paths may be affected.

“AirAsia has notified all affected guests on their flight status and recovery options,” Bernama quoted the airline as saying, adding that it was working to ensure passengers could resume their journeys safely on the next available flight.

It urged passengers travelling to and from the affected destinations to check their latest flight status through AirAsia’s website or contact its customer support team.

Earlier, Reuters reported that the suspension of flights at Soekarno-Hatta international airport has affected 33 flights, including several international flights.

Mount Anak Krakatau has erupted since late on Friday, with volcanic ash detected in the airport early on Sunday, it quoted the transportation ministry as saying. - FMT
