FTPB to meet tomorrow to discuss Najib’s pardon bid, says report

The meeting comes a week after the Federal Territories Pardons Board deferred the former prime minister’s application to its next sitting.

Former prime minister Najib Razak was convicted six years ago of misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International funds.

The Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) will meet tomorrow to discuss former prime minister Najib Razak’s bid for a pardon.

The Straits Times reported that the meeting comes just a week after the board deferred Najib’s application at its previous meeting.

“This is a very rare move. Out of the blue, the board will have another meeting with just one item on the agenda. I think there is some sort of intervention,” an official source told The Straits Times.

It was previously reported that the Sept 11 FTPB meeting was expected to consider Najib’s bid for a pardon, among other matters.

Najib, 73, was convicted six years ago of misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International funds, and was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and a RM210 million fine.

The FTPB later reduced this to six years and RM50 million. He has been serving his sentence at Kajang prison since August 2022.

In December 2025, Najib was convicted of abuse of power and money laundering involving more than RM2 billion linked to 1MDB. He was sentenced to 15 years’ jail and fined RM11.38 billion. He is appealing this conviction.

Najib was prime minister from 2009 to 2018. - FMT
