Selangor ready to distribute face masks for high-risk groups

 State executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the mask distribution would focus on areas with the highest air pollution readings, and target vulnerable groups.

With unhealthy air quality recorded at six stations in Selangor, the public has been advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities.

The Selangor disaster management committee is ready to distribute face masks to the public and civil servants to cope with the smoke pollution from transboundary haze.

Unhealthy air quality was recorded at 4pm in Johan Setia (181 on the air pollutant index), Shah Alam (168), Kuala Selangor (158), Petaling Jaya (157), Klang (156) and Banting (155).

State executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the face mask distribution would focus on areas with the highest air pollution readings, and target vulnerable groups.

She advised the public, especially high-risk groups such as senior citizens and those with heart or respiratory conditions, to limit physical and outdoor activities and to remain indoors if air quality is unhealthy.

Jamaliah said the state government would continue to monitor data and updates from agencies such as the environment department and meteorological department. - FMT
