KOTA KINABALU: A Cabinet paper on the sports industry is expected to be tabled within a month, says youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh.

She said the scope of the paper includes sports medicine, use of health supplements, insurance, gym operators and sports facilities, organisation of sports activities and conferences, as well as various other sports-related activities that have the potential to increase the country’s income.

“It is important to look at the industry revolving around sports itself and see how we can work together under the ministry,” she said.

“With this move, the youth and sports ministry will no longer be seen as a small ministry that only focusses on two things. There is a whole industry there that we can explore and which can benefit the people,” Yeoh said.

The ministry will collaborate with the statistics department to collect related data. “We have been working with the department before this on the retail value that comes through sports, but we want more than that,” she said.

With more comprehensive data involving the sports sector, her ministry would be able to better stimulate the growth of sports in the country by bringing in more funds and investments.

She added that the establishment of the sports industry sector is also expected to enable the government to allocate more specific funds for the ministry, particularly in the fields of sports medicine and sports science, which are currently mainly allocated to the health ministry.
