MCA still part of coalition govt, says Saifuddin

MCA is still part of the coalition government, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said today.

Speaking at a press conference in Cheras this afternoon, he also said that representatives from MCA had been present at recent meetings involving its coalition, BN.

“MCA remains as a component in the unity government, in BN,” he stressed.

Its president Wee Ka Siong had even been sitting next to him at a coalition government meeting a few days ago, Saifuddin added.

On April 23, Wee questioned the need for his party to assist DAP in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election as the latter often insulted them.

In the TikTok video he posted, Wee shared a short clip of DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke saying he doesn’t like MCA and called the party a “taukeh party” that’s only for the rich and people with positions.

In response, Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam urged MCA to decide on its position in the coalition government.

Meanwhile, Saifuddin commented on the government’s Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election candidate, Pang Sock Tao, expressing his belief that she was capable of implementing the government’s policies at the state and central levels.

“I believe that Kuala Kubu Baharu voters will be able to make a reasonable assessment.

“Evaluate this candidate as young, aggressive, having good work experience and (possesses) a good educational background.

“She is also born in the state of Selangor, with experience serving the party and in the government,” the Harapan secretary-general added.

‘I appreciate Bersih’s views’

Commenting on Bersih’s view that the Selangor government’s Hari Raya open house event today could be in breach of the Election Offences Act 1954, Saifuddin said he appreciated the NGO’s warning.

“There are already laws in place governing election offences. Bersih, as an entity, has presented its views and I believe all parties can make appropriate judgments in accordance with the advice presented,” he said.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign begins today, with four candidates contesting the seat - Pang, Khairul Azhari Saut (Perikatan Nasional), Hafizah Zainudin (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) and Nyau Ke Xin (independent).

The seat was left vacant by the death of its incumbent Lee Kee Hiong last month. - Mkini
