SEPANG: Suspended Deputy President Muhyiddin Yassin said he would give answers regarding his status in Umno in two days’ time.
He said this when asked by reporters if he was going to follow in former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s footsteps in quitting Umno.
Muhyiddin was recently suspended from his position as Umno deputy president for continuously criticising Prime Minister Najib Razak.
“I will hold a press conference in two days’ time where I will explain the matter of my suspension, my position in Umno and other matters that I need to explain.
“For the time being, I am still in Umno and I would like to thank all my friends who are here today to show support for me,” he said when met at KLIA today after arriving from Vietnam after a four-day visit there.
Yesterday, Mahathir announced that he and his wife, Siti Hasmah Ali, had quit Umno as a sign of protest against the Najib administration.
The longest-serving prime minister expressed hope that Muhyiddin would also leave the ruling party.
Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz had previously called for action against Muhyiddin for constantly attacking and undermining Najib’s administration. In a report today, Nazri also alleged that Muhyiddin was involved in a conspiracy to oust Najib.
When asked on the matter, Muhyiddin simply said “wait for my press conference” and walked away smiling.
Present to welcome him back home were the Gerakan Ketua Cawangan Malaysia (GKCM), the Selamatkan Malaysia group, Parti Amanah Negara member Suhaizan Kaiat, Pagoh Umno division members and individuals from various groups.
While waiting, Muhyiddin’s supporters displayed a banner which read: “Muhyiddin Yassin is one of a kind but has been dismissed – keep fighting while you are still alive”.
One of the GKCM leaders, Said Midon, held a poster that said: “We have lost confidence and reject Najib”.
