Shahrizat's family closes NFC-linked restaurant chain MEATWORKS

A chain of restaurants linked to the family of Wanita Umno head Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil have ceased operations.

Meatworks Corp Sdn Bhd has closed its two restaurants in Citta Mall in Petaling Jaya and Solaris Mont Kiara in Kuala Lumpur, Focus Malaysia reported today

Sharizat's family had been embroiled in the National Feedlot Corp scandal.

Singapore's the Straits Times daily reported then that Meatworks, Brawn Steakhouse and Brazilian churrascaria Senor Santos ceased business at various top-end locations on the island.

Shahrizat was the former women, family and community development minister and was forced to resign the post in April 2012.

Her husband, NFCorp chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Salleh Ismail, and their three children were accused of misusing public funds on the venture.

Salleh is facing charges of criminal breach of trust involving RM 49.7 million and for violating the Companies Act in relation to RM49 million in federal funds given to NFCorp.

In April 2013, it was reported that NFCorp would continue operating after a takeover by a Malaysian-Japanese joint venture firm – Kirimitonas Agro Sdn Bhd (KASB).

The deal involves a RM250 million debt takeover plan.

However, in a written reply to Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua in Parliament in October last year, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also the finance minister, said that the deal had been scrapped as Putrajaya and KASB could not reach an agreement on the matter.

“Kirimitonas Agro Sdn Bhd had offered to take over all of NFC's assets and liabilities,” Najib said in his reply.

"The deal was to ensure that the project will carry on to meet its objectives of ensuring sufficient supply of beef.

“However, both parties could not reach an agreement (and) negotiations have ended." - The Sundaily
