RM50 fee for UM degree scrolls abolished

Following strong objections raised by the students, the management of Universiti Malaya (UM) has decided to abolish the RM50 charge for the degree certificates issued by the university.

The UM management last Wednesday took the decision that from July, it would only issue digital certificates to its graduates and those wanting the printed scrolls would have to make a request and pay the fee of RM50 per certificate.

UM Student Council president Fahmi Zainol (left) said the university's examination section made the decision to drop the fee for the printed certificates in an official announcement on Tuesday.

Crediting the students and mass media coverage for the reversal in the UM decision, Fahmi said such pressure worked effectively and resulted in the management dropping the new policy.

“The change came about as a result of the strong opposition and dissatisfaction raised by the students. We are also glad that the university has been willing to consider our voice,” he told Malaysiakini today.

The digital certificate move by UM drew widespread criticism from several student groups in the campus, with some of them even describing it as a "scrolls for sale" scheme.

Since then, Fahmi said, the student council initiated a petition urging the university to abolish the RM50 charge and this received a tremendous response from the students.

“Some of them had even donated A4 papers as a symbol to reject the unreasonable scroll charge,” he said.

The other student groups that took part in the petition were Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany), the pro-Mahasiswa (pro-M) group, Muslim Students Association of  Universiti Malaya (PMIUM) and other state-based groups, Fahmi added.
