PKR KEEPING MUM ON PENANG GOVT 16.7 PER CENT WATER TARIFF HIKE

Sim_Tze_Tzin
(NST) – Despite its strong cry against the Goods and Services Tax (GST), PKR has failed to explain on the average 16.7 per cent water tariff hike in the state beginning early this month.
PKR strategic director Sim Tze Tzin, when pressed by reporters, had refused to comment if the hike would burdened the people, as opposed to the 6 per cent GST charge.
“Please refer to the (Penang Water Supply Corporation) CEO’s (chief executive officer) statement,” he said, declining to elaborate.
PKR and its Pakatan allies were harping on the GST implementation as one of their main tools in the ongoing Permatang Pauh by-election campaign.
It was reported that Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng had said the water tariff hike, the third since DAP-led government came into power in 2008, was done to avoid water rationing in the state.
On March 19, the Penang Water Supply Corporation had announced a new water tariff with an increase of 16.7 per cent effective April 1.
Its general manager, Jaseni Maidinsa was reported as saying that the main objective of reviewing the water tariff was to facilitate water management and reducing water consumption to avoid rationing.
The PBAPP had on September 2013 increased the water conservation surcharge from 24 sen to 48 sen for every 1,000 litres for users consuming more than 35,000 litres per month.
