Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar denied that he is the mystery man who made an undisclosed offer for fugitive Sirul Azhar Umar to make statements that would benefit certain quarters "politically".
"I have not been in contact with Sirul for a long time, but if he wants to speak up, then that is his right to clear his and his family's name," Mahfuz told Malaysiakini.
Sirul, together with Azilah Hadri, both police commandos, were in February last year sentenced to death for the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu which happened in 2006.
However, Sirul did not attend the verdict and it was later discovered he fled to Australia and is now being held at Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney.
On Dec 31 last year, Sirul's lawyer Kamarul Hisham Kamaruddin claimed that his client had received calls with offers to make certain statements.
Kamarul said he was aware who the individuals were and was pursuing the issue through legal means but declined to reveal their identities as of yet.
"I do not think Kamarul was referring to me," said Mahfuz.
Mahfuz also questioned whether Kamarul was acting in Sirul's interest.
The lawyer had previously denied that Sirul had made a statutory declaration claiming that he was instructed by powerful individuals to murder Altantuya.
"Why is he (Kamarul) acting for Sirul? Is he instead trying to imply that Sirul committed the murder (on his own accord)?" said Mahfuz.
Mahfuz had come under the spotlight after Kamarul's revelation, as he had in March last year accompanied Sirul's mother to Australia to see her son.
Mahfuz had also helped arrange a meeting between Sirul's mother and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. -Mkini
