HUSM's pilot drive-through vaccination system a success

The pilot drive-through Covid-19 vaccination system recently implemented by Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) Kubang Kerian, Kota Bharu, has successfully administered the first dose to 131 individuals so far.

HUSM director Dr Ahmad Sukari Halim (above) said the system was implemented in two phases in March and May.

He said the first phase on March 22 involved 123 individuals comprising hospital staff, while the second phase on May 25 was administered to eight HUSM patients.

"The first drive-through exercise was carried out outside of the vaccination centre, while phase two was conducted outside the main hall at HUSM's Health Faculty.

"Only the ones chosen according to set criteria were vaccinated via the drive-through method," Sukari said.

He added that the vaccinated patients must also be certified eligible by an evaluating doctor.

Earlier, National Immunisation Programme (NIP) Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin reportedly said a directive and guideline would be issued for all states that intended to roll out the drive-through vaccination system.

He said several states had requested permission to roll out the system, following a positive response to the HUSM's pilot project.

The government will issue standard operating procedures on the drive-through vaccination locations, Khairy added.

"We need to ensure there is a safety guideline. It cannot be just a drive-through, inject (the vaccine), and immediately leave," he said.

On Twitter, Khairy also said the system will be expanded to boost vaccination rates and provide more practical options for recipients. - Mkini
