MACC to seek info from DoJ in probe into ex-Astro CEO

Former Goldman Sachs executive Tim Leissner claims that he was blackmailed into buying a US$10 million home in London for ex-Astro group CEO Rohana Rozhan.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will ask the US Department of Justice (DoJ) for information regarding former Goldman Sachs Southeast Asia chairman Tim Leissner in its investigation into former Astro group CEO Rohana Rozhan.

Last week, Leissner told the US jury in the corruption trial of Roger Ng, Goldman’s former head of investment banking in Malaysia, that he had bought Rohana, with whom he had a 10-year affair, a US$10 million London property in 2013.

He claimed she blackmailed him following the breakup of their relationship and threatened to expose his involvement in 1MDB.

Berita Harian quoted an MACC source as saying an application would be made to the DoJ to obtain more information on Leissner’s allegations.

Rohana gave a statement to the MACC last week, and the source said the anti-graft agency was reviewing the information.

“Currently, no other individual has been called to give a statement regarding the investigation into the case,” the source was quoted as saying.

Rohana is believed to being investigated under Section 4 (1) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Act (AMLA) 2001.

The MACC has issued an order to freeze her assets and bank accounts.

Leissner, the star witness in the trial in Brooklyn, New York, pleaded guilty to charges of violating US anti-corruption and money laundering laws in 2018.
