KUALA LUMPUR: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Malaysia are committed to continuing humanitarian aid missions to Palestine in the new year, said Ops Ihsan secretariat chairman Jismi Johari.

Jismi said the NGOs would collect funds to provide essentials, including food, personal care items and tents, to the Palestinians.

Three humanitarian aid missions had been carried out through Ops Ihsan this year – on Nov 3, Nov 10 and Dec 19 – with the total cost of items and transportation amounting to about RM14 million.

“Although we have distributed food, medicine and personal care items, they are still not enough to meet the needs of the people in Gaza,” he told Bernama.

“More than 1.7 million people there are homeless and living as refugees, so they need tents to be used as shelter and we hope to provide such assistance.”

Jismi, who is also the Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief (MAHAR) president, said the next consignment of aid items was expected to be sent in early January by sea, involving 10 containers.

Ops Ihsan, coordinated by the foreign affairs ministry, is led by MAHAR and supported by more than 50 NGOs, including Global Peace Mission (GPM) Malaysia, Red A Humanitarian Development Global, Mercy Malaysia, and the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (Mapim). - FMT
