TUARAN: The upcoming 17th Sabah election will be the last for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor to contest.
The 70-year-old Sulaman assemblyman said he had served in politics for 35 years.
"I have informed my people in Sulaman that this (17th state election) will be my last to contest.
"It is because I am the chairman of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, the Chief Minister, and the president of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan).
"Otherwise, I am actually very tired of politics. I am old already, although my heart is still 'young'.
"Half of my life, I have been an elected representative for 35 years.
"I am now 70 years old," he said when launching the SK Bundung Hall in Tuaran.
Hajiji began his career as a public servant before entering politics in 1990 as a member of the United Sabah National Organisation (USNO).
The seasoned politician from Kampung Serusup, Tuaran, joined Umno in 1994 after USNO was dissolved.
Following the fall of the Barisan Nasional government in 2020, Hajiji led former Sabah Umno leaders to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
Two years later, after the 15th general election, Hajiji again led an exodus, this time from Bersatu, to form the local-based Gagasan.
Last month, GRS also proposed a two-term limit for the Sabah Chief Minister's post, to be included in its election manifesto. - NST
