Public Complaints Bureau to probe BTN's Hamim on Thurs

KUALA LUMPUR (Star) - National Civics Bureau (BTN) assistant director Hamim Husin has been summoned to the Public Complaints Bureau office to clarify on Thursday his alleged racist remarks. Hamim has denied making the remarks.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk T. Murugiah said that the bureau had received many complaints regarding the remarks Hamim had reportedly made at a Puteri Umno event on Monday that were offensive to the Chinese and Indian communities and the bureau needed to investigate the matter.

The report on the investigation would be sent to the Public Services Department, he said in a statement late Wednesday.

The Cabinet, earlier Wednesday, had instructed the Chief Secretary to the Government to investigate Hamim’s alleged remarks.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said that all the Cabinet ministers were upset about the allegations and wanted a full investigation.

However, he pointed out that everyone was relying on a report on an online portal claiming the assistant director made the racist remarks. This was not enough to take action and a proper probe was needed, he said.

On Tuesday, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek had said Hamim had failed to understand the concept of democracy and was not longer fit to hold his position.
