Perkasa wants a Bumi Pemandu

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 – Perkasa urged the government today to form a special unit headed by a minister to protect the interest of Bumiputeras.

The Malay rights group’s economic bureau chief Dr Zubir Harun said such a unit should enjoy a similar status as the government’s performance management and delivery unit (Pemandu) as led by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Idris Jala.

“Pemandu is effective, but they are lacking a Bumiputera agenda,” said Zubir after a Perkasa economic bureau meeting.

“So we want a Pemandu for the Bumiputera agenda with a chief executive officer with ministerial status,” he added.

“Of course the CEO must be someone who is passionate about the Bumiputera agenda and not a liberal Malay,” he said.

Zubir said that the proposed unit would complement the role played by the Bumiputera Agenda Supreme Council, whose formation was announced by Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the end of the Umno general assembly last October.

The Perkasa vice-president said special labs similar to Pemandu’s should also be set up to focus on issues of interest to Bumiputeras.

“We will get all the Malay NGOs involved in the labs. Just like how Pemandu announces their plans, this unit should also be able to offer their plans, but specifically on Bumiputera issues,” said Zubir.

Perkasa was formed soon after Election 2008 by independent Pasir Mas MP Datuk Ibrahim Ali who had claimed that it was in response to increasing threats to the Malays.

The group has successfully turned into a pressure group that ensures the government continues to protect what Perkasa calls the constitutional position of the Malays, in particular the pro-Bumiputera policy in relation to government projects and scholarships.

Last May a Perkasa-led Bumiputera Economic Congress passed a resolution rejecting the Najib administration’s New Economic Model (NEM) which the group claimed had abandoned the pro-Bumiputera policy. - Malaysian Insider
