Cops quiz Anwar over speech

The opposition leader is grilled over a speech which touched on the Bersih rally. Anwar says the police are acting on Umno's orders.

KUALA LUMPUR: The police recorded a statement from Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim over a speech he gave during a PKR event on June 12, which touched on the upcoming Bersih rally.

Immediately after his Mercedes Benz entered the Dang Wangi police district headquarters’ compound around 4.30pm, more than 10 police personnel were deployed to guard the main entrance.

Anwar, who was accompanied by his wife PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, was being investigated under the Police Act and Sedition Act.

Earlier, the police had recorded statements from several PKR leaders, including Anwar’s daughter and party vice-president Nurul Izzah.

Speaking to reporters later, Anwar said that it was clear the authorities were trying to make a “monster” out of Bersih upon the orders of Umno.

As Bersih was merely a platform to demand for a free and fair election, he questioned the rationale of the authorities in insinuating that its rally scheduled for July 9 would cause chaos in the country.

“It’s obvious that Umno leaders want to continue the process of fraudulent elections. That is why they fear the calls for free and fair polls,” he said.

Anwar added that in the end, the police would end up bearing the brunt of the people’s anger for their double standard due to the ruling party’s interference.

“When has there been a gathering that was threatening to burn, is let (to go on) without any police action?” he asked.

He was referring to an incident last night, where hundreds of Umno Youth supporters gathered outside the PKR headquarters in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya.

It was reported that the supporters threatened to torch the building if PKR did not revoke its support for the Bersih rally.

On whether he expected mass arrests under the Internal Security Act (ISA) soon, Anwar, a two time ISA detainee, said it was hard to predict what “corrupt leaders would do to remain in power”.

“But they will defend their positions zealously,” he added.
