Zahid: No compromise over Dec 31 rally

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has said that the government will make "no concessions" over the Dec 31 rally protesting price hikes, branding it a rally aimed to topple the government.

The Star today quoted Ahmad Zahid as warning people from participating in the demonstration scheduled to take place at Dataran Merdeka, while also urging rally organisers to it call off.

He was also quoted blaming the opposition for supporting the rally, labelling it a "subversive political culture" created by those in the opposition.

"Be a responsible opposition and do not try to take advantage of the situation," he said, while urging the opposition "to put an immediate end" to the "negative" political culture.

Meanwhile, PAS Ulama chief Harun Taib (left) was quoted by broadsheet Utusan Malaysia as saying that it would be "impossible" for the New Year’s Eve rally to topple the government.

He stressed that the rally was not aimed at toppling the government, as claimed by the government itself.

"I do not think there will be chaos during the rally.

"The talk about toppling the government is something that the government itself is claiming, but if the government acts extraordinarily, then there might be chaos," he was quoted as saying.
