Agong urges Muslims to harmonise differing views

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, today urged Muslims in the country to strive always to strengthen brotherhood and harmonise their differing views in making evaluations.

It was obligatory to foster and reinforce unity so that Muslims were not looked down upon by enemies striving constantly to promote their own agenda, he said when launching the national-level ‘Maulidur Rasul’ (Prophet Muhammad’s birthday) celebration at the Putra Mosque in Putrajaya.

“Lately, it has come to my notice that a handful of Muslims are easily influenced by foreign ideology brought into our community. This ideology is seen as incompatible with the beliefs of the Sunni community and common practices of Muslims in this country.”

Tuanku Abdul Halim pointed out that on the one hand, the varying views on the different sects might be assumed as trivial because it involved merely peripheral issues.

The launch of the celebration, carrying the theme ‘Wasatiyyah Tonggak Kesatuan Ummah’ (Moderation Thrust of Muslim Unity), was also attended by the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Haminah.

Also present were Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor; Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his wife Noorainee Abdul Rahman; Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom, several other cabinet ministers; chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa and heads of foreign missions.

The Agong said the tendency for Muslims to engage in polemics on trivial issues only portrayed a poor image of the community and made it to be seen as immature and having failed to master the various fields of knowledge.

“But, remember, the debate and discussion on these (issues) in a cynical and foolhardy manner can invite conflict, trigger polemics and lead to disunity and public anxiety,” he said.

Tuanku Abdul Halim said that in conjunction with this year’s ‘Maulidur Rasul’ celebration, all Malaysians should maintain and strengthen unity for the advancement of the nation.

“Let us together make every effort to strengthen brotherhood and bring about changes and improvements in the Islamic mould as taught by Prophet Muhammad in a moderate and balanced manner,” he said.

Moderation and balance the basis of Islamic teachings

Tuanku Abdul Halim said moderation and balance were the basis of Islamic teachings and the approach adopted by Prophet Muhammad.

He said the Prophet himself had succeeded in ridding the community of bad habits and a culture of fanatical beliefs and substituting these with a culture of tolerance and mutual understanding of one another.

“The Prophet had proven that diversity in society, regardless of whether it is in terms of religion, culture or language, is not a problem and obstacle to unity so long as the approach of ‘wasatiyyah’ (moderation) is adopted as a practice in life,” he said.

Tuanku Abdul Halim said embracing the ‘wasatiyyah’ approach would lead to unity and excellence.

“Remember, political stability and harmony in a multi-racial community will contribute a great deal to the socio-economic improvement of our beloved country,” he said.

At the event, Tuanku Abdul Halim presented the ‘Tokoh Perdana’ award of the Maulidur Rasul 2014 celebration to Dr Mohd Daud Abu Bakar, chairperson of the Syariah Advisory Council of Bank Negara Malaysia.

Mohd Daud received RM50,000 cash, a plaque, a certificate and a set of the ‘Tafsir Fi Zilal al Quran’ commentary of the Quran.

Eight other individuals received the ‘Maulidur Rasul’ award comprising RM20,000 cash, a plaque, a certificate and a prize each.

Earlier, the Maulidur Rasul celebration began with a procession of 157 contingents comprising 13,598 participants from government departments, statutory bodies, the private sector, uniformed bodies, schools, institutions of higher learning and non-governmental organisations.

The participants moved in a procession for 1.7 kilometres from the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry building via Persiaran Perdana to the Putra Mosque.

This year’s procession had a unique flavour with the participation of high-powered motorcycles from the 300KMJ Motorcycle Club, a paramotor group from the Malaysian Paramotor Association, boats from the Putrajaya Corporation and a parade of Vespas from the Malaysian Vespa Association.
