Return seized Bibles, MCA tells Selangor gov't

MCA has urged the Selangor government to stop shirking responsibility and return copies of the Alkitab that were seized by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) from the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM).

The party’s religious harmony bureau chairperson Ti Lian Ker said that while the Pakatan Rakyat-led state government has provided its version of the events involving the controversial raid, nothing had been said on the fate of the seized Malay and Iban-language Bibles and whether they will be returned.

“They should stop evading their responsibility as elected representatives as this is not what the people want to see from them,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“I also strongly urge Pakatan to stop defending themselves and instead sincerely apologise and return the bibles to BSM.”

Jais had seized 321 copies of the Malay-language Bible and 10 copies of the Iban-language Bible during the Jan 2 raid on BSM - both of which contain the word 'Allah' as the translation for 'God'.

It is currently investigating two BSM officials - its chairperson Lee Min Choon and office manager Sinclair Wong - under the Selangor Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Among Muslims) Enactment 1988, which prohibits the use of the word 'Allah' and 33 other Arabic words and phrases in reference to religions other than Islam.
