PETALING JAYA: Authorities from the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives, and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) yesterday seized 11,174 ‘knock-off’ cell-phone accessory items, worth up to RM 150,990 from Low Yat Plaza.
Utusan Malaysia reported that the goods had been seized following a surprise raid conducted at 2.30pm in the afternoon on 120 merchants in the complex in Kuala Lumpur.
The raid, jointly carried out by officers from the police force and the Immigration Department, followed numerous complaints said to have been made by the public, according to KPDNKK Secretary-General Alias Ahmad.
Three immigrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan were also arrested during the raid for allegedly violating their social visit passes and for overstaying.
“Prior to the raid KPDNKK had carried out an investigation,” Alias said.
He added that all cases will be further investigated under Section 8 of Trade Descriptions Act 2011, which prescribes fines of up to RM10,000 for each unit seized, or a jail sentence of up to three years, upon conviction.
More such raids are in the works nationwide, according to Alias, with a focus on businesses with multiple complaints made against them. This is to ensure that consumers are not victimized and traders are not violating laws and regulations, he said.
He urged the public to come forward with their complaints, which can be made via the ministry’s KPDNKK.gov.my website and also by telephone at 1300–88-6800. Complainants can also walk into the ministry’s offices.
