Back down, or be declared 'enemy of Muslims', Liow warned

A Muslim group has threatened to declare MCA president Liow Tiong Lai an "enemy of Muslims" and campaign against him in the next general election.
The threat from Yayasan Ummah Prihatin Pahang (YUPP) also extended to all MCA candidates contesting in the state.
YUPP has demanded that Liow, who is the MP for Bentong, back down from opposing the proposed amendments to enhance the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355).
"If you fail to retract your statements and ask for forgiveness from Muslims, we urge you to resign as cabinet minister without waiting for the first reading of the bill on March 2017. It is best if you resign by Dec 31," said YUPP chairperson Shamsuddin Moner in a statement.
"If you fail to accede to our demands by Dec 31, we will declare in Pahang, more specifically in the Bentong parliamentary seat on Jan 1, 2017, that you are an enemy of the Muslims and we will ensure that no Muslim will vote for you or any MCA candidate,"he added.
Shamsuddin hoped that Liow would respect the position of Islam as well as the sensitivities of Muslims in Malaysia.
He vowed that should MCA support the amendments, YUPP would help ensure that the party's candidates win the votes of Muslims in GE14.
He reminded Liow that up till now MCA managed to gain the support of Muslim voters for its continued respect of Islam.
It is only recently, Shamsuddin said, MCA appeared to display open opposition towards Islamic institutions, specifically in opposing the amendments.
On Sunday, Liow issued a clarification that he did not change his stand on the matter in the wake of certain news reports which suggested as such.

The MCA president reiterated that the opposition was because the bill was unconstitutional, and not because the party was against Islam.
Apart from MCA, the amendments brought forth by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang also drew opposition from other BN component parties as well as DAP.
Hadi has warned these parties not to interfere in a matter which concerned Muslims.- Mkini
