PH insists Anwar has the numbers, hopes Agong grants audience

Anwar Ibrahim is Pakatan Harapan’s choice for the prime minister’s post.
PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan is hoping that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, its prime ministerial candidate to fill the current power vacuum, will be granted an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.
In a statement which followed the palace’s confirmation that the Agong had yet to see any clear majority enjoyed by any of the political blocs vying to form the next government, the PH Presidential Council insisted that Anwar has the majority support.
“The Presidential Council believes that Anwar Ibrahim should be given the opportunity to have an audience with the Agong to prove that he has the confidence from the majority of MPs,” it added.
Earlier this evening, the palace said it would consult political leaders again after the King confirmed that interview sessions with MPs this week failed to reveal which political bloc had the majority support.
Yesterday, interim Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad revealed that the Agong was unable to decide on who had the majority to form the government.
He said the next prime minister would be decided during a special Dewan Rakyat sitting on March 2.
However, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Yusof rejected Mahathir’s notice, saying it could only be convened after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had decided on the formation of a new government.
The King had met with MPs from both sides of the divide to hear their views on who should lead the next government following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government this week. - FMT
