PETALING JAYA: Klang MP Charles Santiago has called for the education ministry to reveal the number of non-Bumiputera students who received places at matriculation colleges.

In a letter to education minister Radzi Jidin, the MP said more than 200 Indian students were denied places despite excellent results in the SPM examination.

“Why have these excellent students failed to get placements?” he said, and asked Radzi to take immediate action. “The quota for non-Bumiputera students in matriculation colleges is 10%,” Santiago said.

He called on Radzi and the ministry to disclose the number of students, by race, who successfully received places.

In April 2019, the Pakatan Harapan government decided to increase the number of students in the public matriculation programme, from 25,000 to 40,000.

However, the quota of 90% Bumiputera students and 10% non-Bumiputera was maintained.

The education minister then, Maszlee Malik, said the decision was made to ensure excellent students continued having the best opportunity to pursue higher education. - FMT
