PKR candidate for 2019 Rantau by-election now with PBM?

Dr S Streram was Pakatan Harapan’s candidate who lost in the 2019 Rantau by-election.

PETALING JAYA: Dr S Streram, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate who lost in the 2019 Rantau by-election, is now a Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) member, according to a source in the Zuraida Kamaruddin-led party.

“He joined PBM’s Selangor chapter last month,” the source told FMT.

Multiple attempts to contact Streram for confirmation on the matter proved unsuccessful.

Streram is the former deputy Rembau PKR chief. He was the coalition’s candidate for the Rantau state seat against then Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan in the 14th general election (GE14).

However, on nomination day, he was barred from entering the nomination centre as he did not have a pass from the Election Commission (EC), thus allowing Mohamad to win uncontested.

Streram then filed a suit against the EC, with the court ruling in his favour. The outcome of the Rantau seat in GE14 was declared void and a by-election was held in 2019.

Nonetheless, Mohamad, the Umno deputy president, retained his seat for a fourth term after obtaining 10,397 votes against Streram’s 4,510.

It was rumoured that the former PKR leader was attempting to resurrect his political career through PBM after a picture surfaced of him attending a Negeri Sembilan chapter meeting earlier this month.

The source in PBM said it was too early to say if Streram, or other PBM leaders for that matter, will be contesting in Selangor in the next general election (GE15).

The source said this depended on whether PBM was accepted into Barisan Nasional.

“We can only discuss seats if we have officially joined BN. For now, we will just continue with our work in our existing constituencies,” the source said.

PBM currently has four seats in the Dewan Rakyat and five at the state level.

Earlier this month, Zuraida, who is the PBM president-designate, said three more MPs and two assemblymen will be joining the party, adding that an announcement would be made in the party’s national congress this weekend. - FMT
