KUALA LUMPUR: More than 26,000 applications have been submitted for 6-year-old pupils since the opening of the Year One intake for the 2027 academic calendar.
Buletin Utama reported that Education director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said more than 165,000 applications had also been received for 7-year-old Year One pupils.
He said that both age groups had seen strong interest since online registration opened on Feb 15.
"As of the third day of registration, the Education Ministry has received 165,906 applications for children born in 2020, who will be seven in 2027. For 6-year-old children born in 2021 applying for early entry into Year One, we have received 26,229 applications," he said when contacted.
Azam added that parents of 6-year-old children who register late would be able to submit manual applications from April 1 to Nov 15, provided their child was ready for school.
"Parents can contact the district education office, state education department, or the chosen school directly. From Sept 1 to 30, the district education offices will coordinate Year One placement appeals," he said, adding that appeals could be made for reasons such as a change of residence, the need to place siblings in the same school, or other reasonable considerations.
Parents who are uncertain about their 6-year-old child's readiness for school are encouraged to seek professional advice from the school or education officers.
"Through schools, district education offices and state education departments, the ministry is ready to provide guidance so that parents can make the best decision for their children," he said.
Online registration for Year One of the 2027 academic session remains open until March 31 via the ministry's integrated system through the Identity Management System (idMe) portal at https://idme.moe.gov.my. - NST
