MP urges MOE to address 2,506 contract teachers left in lurch

Some 2,506 teachers contracted by the Education Ministry will have their agreements expire in June with no recourse in sight, said Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching.

In view of this, Teo, a former deputy education minister, said the Education Ministry should respond to their woes immediately or extend their contracts next month.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Teo said representatives of the 2,506 teachers had informed her of their plight.

These contract teachers were all currently pursuing post-graduate diplomas and had signed their two-year contracts on June 10, 2020.

“All the contract teachers are undergoing practical training until May 27. Their semester results will only be known in July 2022.

“If their contract expires on June 10, then these contract teachers will not receive a salary from June 11 onwards. This will burden these teachers, especially those who are married and have a family,” she said.

Teo explained that normally, upon completion of the post-graduate diplomas, the contract teachers will be absorbed as Education Ministry teachers.

These teachers, she said, are specialising in English, Bahasa Malaysia, History, Islamic Education and Physical Education.
