Top Japan honour for former minister Tok Pa

Mustapa Mohamed
Mustapa Mohamed was recognised for his efforts on the Look East policy, the trans-Pacific free trade agreement, and ensuing LNG supplies for Japan.

PETALING JAYA: Former federal minister Mustapa Mohamed has been conferred a Japanese order of chivalry for his contributions to Japan-Malaysia relationships.

The Japanese embassy said Mustapa was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in the spring honours list, according to a Bernama report.

The embassy said Mustapa, as minister of international trade and industry, had strengthened Japan-Malaysia trade and economic relations through promoting Malaysia’s participation in the trans-Pacific free trade agreement, and in developing the Look East policy.

He had also strengthened Japan-Malaysia energy relationships by providing a stable supply of liquefied natural gas to Japan and announcing Malaysia’s support for the Asia zero emission community, the statement said.

Mustapa, popularly known as Tok Pa, is a former MP for Jeli, Kelantan who has served as a cabinet minister from 1998 to 2022. He held several positions, and was international trade minister from 2009 to 2018, and later minister for the economy from March 2020 to November 2022.

A longstanding member of Umno, he joined Bersatu in 2018 following Barisan Nasional’s fall from power. He announced his retirement from politics before the November 2022 general election. - FMT
