KhalidKUCHING: Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar today confirmed that the suspect involved in vandalism at a Hindu temple in Ipoh had been treated for a medical condition at the KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital.
Speaking to reporters in Batu Kawah here today, Khalid took Health Ministry Deputy Director-General Dr S Jeyaindran to task for saying there was no record showing the suspect who desecrated the temple suffered from any mental disorder.
“I think he only referred to government hospital records, not at other places, including private hospital facilities.
“So I want to officially state that the suspect had undergone mental treatment since 2013 at KPJ Ipoh.
“We will not have made a statement without checking our facts first.”
He also warned Dr Jeyaindran to do proper research before issuing any statement that may confuse the public and contribute to the spread of inaccurate information.
Dr Jeyaindran had, in a statement yesterday, said his ministry was not aware the 29-year-old, who was an intern at a government hospital in Ipoh, had any mental issues.
“I am not sure where they obtained the information from but the ministry is not aware of it,” he was reported as saying in Malay Mail.
In the incident, the suspect entered a temple in Jalan Raja Asman Shah in Ipoh on Sunday and smashed several idols, before fleeing the scene.
However, he was involved in an accident soon after and was arrested.
According to Jeyaindran, the suspect joined the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital on April 11 as an intern houseman but resigned just 11 days later – two days before he walked into a Hindu temple and smashed several statues.
