After Rayer's victory, Guan Eng goes on 'celaka' tirade against GST

Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng went on a brief tirade against the goods and services tax (GST) yesterday, calling it 'celaka' (damned) several times.
"Celaka GST, celaka GST," Lim said at the start of his rant at a DAP fundraising dinner in Kuala Lumpur last night.
The DAP secretary-general joked that Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer's sedition acquittal for saying 'celaka' gave him licence to use the word.
"Rayer won in court so we can say celaka.
"Celaka GST for making life hard for the people."
The Sessions Court in George Town on Thursday found that Rayer's 'Umno celaka' remark two years ago in the Penang state assembly was not seditious.
The GST was implemented in April 2014, and critics have often blamed it for contributing to the rising cost of living.
Some 1,000 people attended the fundraising dinner held in SJK(C) Chong Hua's hall last night.
During the event, DAP managed to collect RM138,000 in donations.
The crowd also joined in a photo session, holding up placards which said 'Solidarity with Guan Eng' and 'Fight back', in support of Lim, who is on trial for corruption.
Lim was charged with approving the rezoning of a plot of land in Balik Pulau from agriculture to residential use, which the prosecutors said was done to benefit one of the landowners, businesswoman Phang Li Koon.

Lim chaired the state planning committee that approved the rezoning, which was later rejected by the Penang Island City Council.
Phang is also the previous owner of the bungalow on Jalan Pinhorn, which Lim purchased for RM2.8 million, purportedly at below its market value.
Phang has also been charged, together with Lim, with abetting him in purchasing the property at below market value, which is an offence in the Penal Code for a public official.
Both Lim and Phang have pleaded not guilty. - Mkini
