16 Bersatu MPs urge Muhyiddin to step down, let Hamzah lead

Internal dissent within Bersatu intensified today after 16 lawmakers issued a joint statement calling on party president Muhyiddin Yassin to step down and hand over the leadership to his deputy, Hamzah Zainudin.

They believed that while Muhyiddin (above) has contributed to the party, he no longer has what it takes to keep Bersatu united and lead the party to win elections.

"We fully support the statement by Bersatu chief whip Ronald Kiandee, who urged Muhyiddin to resign as Bersatu president.

"Without denying his services and contributions, it is a fact that he is no longer capable of keeping the party together and leading it towards victory.

"We are confident that Hamzah can be a good acting party president, and capable of steering Bersatu back to serving the interests of the country and its people, on top of uniting the party to ensure its victory," said the statement, which was shared on Facebook by former Bersatu leader Wan Saiful Wan Jan.

According to the list of signatories, the 16 are Kangar MP Zikri Hassan, Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail (Kubang Pasu), Roslan Hashim (Kulim Bandar Baharu), Khlir Nor (Ketereh), Ikmal Hisyam Abdul Aziz (Tanah Merah), Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang), Rosol Wahid (Hulu Terengganu), Fathul Huzir Ayob (Gerik), Azahari Hassan (Padang Rengas), Nordin Ahmad Ismail (Lumut), Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota), Abdul Khalib Abdullah (Rompin), Kalam Salan (Sabak Bernam), Muslimin Yahaya (Sungai Besar), Islahuddin Abas (Mersing), and Wan Saiful (Tasek Gelugor).

Two of the signatories - Khlir and Islahuddin - when contacted, confirmed the statement as authentic.

Bersatu originally had a total of 31 MPs following the 2022 general election, but the number was reduced to 25 after the party sacked six of them for announcing their support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration.

The party later also sacked Wan Saiful and suspended Wan Fayhsal over alleged disciplinary issues.

Among the other MPs who did not sign the statement today were Muhyiddin (Pagoh), Hamzah (Larut), Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah), Radzi Jidin (Putrajaya), Ronald (Beluran), Suhaimi Abdullah (Langkawi), and Ali Biju (Saratok).

The crack within Bersatu leadership has widened since Ronald issued a statement on Feb 10, urging Muhyiddin to step down. - Mkini
