ALOR STAR: The woman found stabbed to death today in Taman Sultan Abdul Halim, Jalan Tanjung Bendahara, was just weeks away from her Feb 13 wedding.
Her mother told reporters that her daughter, bank operations executive Zaharullail Basir, 52, had been busy preparing for her remarriage.
"She had already made preparations to remarry on Feb 13, and the wedding was to be held the next day together with her younger sister's engagement. That's why I was shocked to learn she was killed around 9am today… I am very sad because she was such a good daughter," said 66-year-old Norsiah Yahya.
Norsiah is Zaharullail's stepmother, who was found stabbed to death at her home today.
She said Zaharullail had six children aged between eight and 28, and only three of them were at home during the incident.
"What I know is that early this morning, her eldest child, 28, returned home around 4am.
"At that time, her fourth child opened the door before going back to their room to continue sleeping. Only this morning did they realise their mother was gone and believed she had been killed, prompting them to contact the police," she said.
Norsiah, who was met at her daughter's home, said that she rushed from her home in Teluk Intan, Perak, together with her husband, Basir Kosot, 70, and her three other children when she learned what had happened.
She added that Zaharullail had returned to Teluk Intan last week with her two children, aged eight and 13, to submit marriage forms at the Religious Affairs Office.
"I have also met her fiancé twice to discuss their wedding plans. My husband received a call around 9am informing us that she had died; we were truly shocked.
"The victim's other children have not been seen yet as they are still at the hospital with their mother's body," she said.
Norsiah said that when Zaharullail returned to her hometown, she was very happy because she was about to remarry after several years as a single mother.
"She really enjoyed the food I cooked whenever she came back to Teluk Intan. Whatever I made, she would eat heartily.
"Even though I am her stepmother, I loved her very much as if she were my own child.
Norsiah said the family is still deciding whether Zaharullail will be laid to rest in Teluk Intan or here in Alor Star.
Police earlier shared that they received a call from Zaharullail's son, reporting a suspected murder involving his mother, who was believed to have been stabbed in the body and struck on the head.
Police believe the murder suspect is a relative who is still at large.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, the victim's younger sister, Zuraini Basir, 47, said her sister was a good person who had sacrificed much to fund their schooling when they were children.
"She was the closest to me, but lately she didn't talk much about her own children. We are really sad that she is gone. When she told us she wanted to marry her old friend, we gave her our blessing," she said. - NST
