Racial unity is a unique paradox in itself.
It exists when it benefits everyone and at the same time is almost non-existent when it’s needed.
Malaysia is where truly Asia exists. They are completely different people in Malaysia the Malays, Chinese, Indians and others are allowed to not only exist but allowed to keep and practice their language, culture and whatever else. They are even subjected by different laws (sharia & civil).
I think our unity is one of a kind, because we love and also “hate” openly. While I do not support any sort of racial preference, I also think the fact that Malaysia was built the way it was is the source of our growing unity.
In my experience alot of multicultural societies tend to hide their grievances in the name of keeping the peace and harmony but in Malaysia, we let it air out in the open. Most of it at least. Might seem counter intuitive, but I truly believe that is what makes our unity unique.
I am of the opinion that Malaysia is still in the midst of crafting the Malaysian identity that we want. It was never going to be easy, this path our forefathers chose. Good things take blood, sweat and tears to build.
To me Malaysia is in its teen years. We have all these feelings for each other and we don't know why or what to do with them so we let our “parents” aka politicians take charge and we all know how that works out. But I believe we are changing as a nation, very slowly but surely.
Ten (10) years ago if you asked me what I thought about the Malay fisherman complaining about his Bumi rights being threatened I would have given the usual non-Bumi answer of “it's a crutch etc etc”. I still think the same of the NEP policy, but nowadays I'd rather ask why said Bumi person feels fear and what can we do as a nation to lift this fear put upon the populace by politics. And I know I'm not alone in this. We will get there in time, eventually.
Malaysia Boleh!
