Amanah eyeing 32 parliamentary seats in GE16

This is fewer than the 54 seats the PH component contested in the 2022 general election.

Amanah strategy director Ahmad Sabki Yusof said 18 of the 32 seats the party is eyeing have been identified as priority constituencies.
PETALING JAYA:
Amanah plans to contest 32 parliamentary seats in the 16th general election (GE16), fewer than the 54 it vied for in the 2022 national polls (GE15).

Amanah strategy director Ahmad Sabki Yusof said 18 of the 32 seats have been identified as priority constituencies, adding that the targets were agreed upon during the party leadership’s retreat in September.

He said Amanah must begin its election preparations immediately rather than wait for Parliament to be dissolved, Berita Harian reported.

“We have listed all the seats Amanah intends to contest and identified our priority constituencies,” he was quoted as saying.

PH contested 220 of the 222 parliamentary seats in GE15, with Amanah allocated 54 and winning only eight.

Sabki said the party was preparing for the possibility of Pakatan Harapan contesting GE16 without a pact with other parties, amid signs of closer cooperation between Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional.

He added that PH would focus on strengthening cooperation among its three component parties – Amanah, PKR and DAP.

“We are determined to retain power at both federal and state levels through our own strength,” he said, adding that Amanah has assessed the level of support needed in its targeted constituencies.

“This time, because we are likely facing an alliance of two Malay parties, Umno and PAS, we need to strengthen our presence on the ground,” he said. - FMT
