KOTA KINABALU, May 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to officiate the state-level Kaamatan Festival celebration on May 30 at the Hongkod Koisaan Hall (KDCA) in Penampang.
The festival’s organising chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said the prime minister’s attendance reflects the federal government’s recognition of Sabah’s culture and the uniqueness of its people.
He said the closing ceremony on May 31 would also be graced by Sabah Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman.
“We have prepared various large-scale cultural performances to welcome our distinguished guests as well as visitors.
“The attention of Sabahans is also focused on the state-level Unduk Ngadau final competition, which will feature 53 contestants vying for this year’s crown,” he told reporters when met after an interview session at Sabah FM studio here last Friday.
On traffic and parking concerns during the celebration, Dr Jeffrey said the committee would provide free shuttle bus services for visitors.
He said the buses would operate on two main routes, from KDCA to Imago and from Suria Sabah to KDCA.
“I strongly encourage visitors to park their vehicles in the city area and use the shuttle bus service because it is easier, more comfortable and will help reduce congestion at KDCA,” he said.
Dr Jeffrey also reminded visitors to maintain good behaviour and appreciate the cultural significance of the Kaamatan Festival.
“We can enjoy ourselves, socialise and savour traditional delicacies, but we must always exercise moderation, especially in the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
“Do not let excessive entertainment diminish the noble values of our culture in the eyes of the younger generation and outside visitors,” he said.
He expressed hope that this year’s celebration would proceed smoothly and safely while becoming a memorable occasion for everyone.
