“By launching a crackdown on peaceful Bersih 3 protesters on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian government is once again showing its contempt for its people’s basic rights and freedoms. Despite all the talk of ‘reform’ over the past year, we’re seeing a repeat of repressive actions by a government that does not hesitate to use force when it feels its prerogatives are challenged," Phil Robertson, deputy director of Asia division, Human Rights Watch said in aemail received by Malaysia Chronicle.
"Malaysia’s diplomatic and trade partners, and foreign investors, should demand the government change tactics and recognize civil society’s right to raise fundamental concerns about respect for rights and good governance.”

"Just so there is no doubt about the hijacking. “@insider_latest: Azmin Ali being hoisted up by supporters," Khairy said on Twitter.
He earned a rap on the knuckles from his opposition rivals.
"That is just 'budak' talk from KJ. Of course, Pakatan will support 100% the Bersih's push for clean and fair elections. That doesn't mean Bersih committee is not independent. Ask him to try and see. Bersih committee will show him who's boss, but this concept of civil society working together with leaders is totally foreig to Umno," slammed PKR vice president Tian Chua.
2.10 pm Meanwhile, reports have been filtering in of successful sister rallies in other countries. The rally in Hong Kong drew at least 400 Malaysians so far. In Sarawak, reports of a "very happening" rally drew warm praise from netizens.

1.33 pm It seems that Bersih has sold more than a million T-shirts so far. However, it has yet to be confirmed and sounds a bit on the high side.
1.30 pm The latest topic of discussion amongst the participants in Wisma Jamek as they try to inch their way towards the Dataran is the crowd size. One news portal has estimated 50,000 which was immediate debunked.
"Much much more than that, just here in Wisma Jamek is easily way above 50,000," Bob Kee, an activist and IT expert, told Malaysia Chronicle.
"I'm standing at the JalanTun Perak traffic light. Its easily more than 100,000. The Umno media will surely try to minimise the number, don't be surprised if the mainstream media reports 5,000 people even. But for sure 50,000 is an intentional understatement. It is so obviously more," Shanker, an ex-accountant and active blogger, toldMalaysia Chronicle.

"I spoke to some of the people and they said it was a bad move by City Hall to refuse the venue. 12.50 pm PKR deputy president Azmin Ali arrives at Wisma Jamek. The crowds are sitting on streets now. Some are hoping Axmin will make a speech. Many are openly defying police instructions not to sit on the road. "too many of us, the police cannot do anything," said one of rally participants.

He was referring to the last minute U-turns and reneging of assurances by the agencies such as getting a court order to ban the 2-hour sit-in protest, a move that had sent waves of red-hot anger across the nation at Najib's high-handedness over what the matter.
11.40 am Video of the Bersih 3.0 rally up to 10.30am. It looks like even the girls - young and old - are out today, chipping their bit for Malaysia to have clean and fair elections. Spontaneous cheering of Bersih, Bersih, Bersih show the pent-up feelings of the people, who do not want to be held back anymore by a corrupt Najib administration that has tried to suppress them by ramming through unfair laws and playing racist card through ultra rights groups such as Perkasa and Jati.

11.00 am police presence is heavy at the Masjid Jamek area, with the officers blocking off exit by exit as they try to control the number of people going through to the Dataran Merdeka, which is just a kilometer away from the station.
10.45 am Since early morning, Kuala Lumpur has been busy, waking at least 3 hours earlier than usual. An air of excitement is in the air. Today, April 28, is D-Day for the Bersih 3.0 rally due to take place across the nation and 71 cities in 29 countries.
Prime Minister Najib Razak has already abandoned all pretense of cool, launching a dragnet across the capital city where the main rally to demand free and fair elections will be held.
The Bersih 3.0 organizers had initially aimed to hold a sit-in protest at the Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur, but permission was denied and a court order issued to bar not only Bersih supporters but also members of the public from coming into the square.
Nonetheless, that has not stopped Bersih co-chief Ambiga Sreenevasan from vowing to take the rally participants to as close to Dataran as possible. It doesn't seem to have frightened off the public either.
Indeed, Malaysians from all over the country have been making their way into the city centre from as early as 6am, using public transportation such buses and the LRT.
Bersih 3.0 - which has targeted a total participation size of 500,000 from all the rallies being held in the country and overseas - looks set to be another astounding success.
There are six places to gather - at Pasar Seni, Masjid Negara, KLCC, Brickfields, Jalan Sultan dan Masjid India - before moving on towards the Dataran.
Meanwhile, Malaysia Chronicle's Nawawi Mohamad reports long queues for tickets at the Masjid Jamek LRT station from as early as 8am onwards. "Each trip is full of Bersih members, around 80 to 90%. The carriages are packed and the members are both young and old."
