Video disalah sunting, Teo lapor polis

Setiausaha Publisiti DAP Teo Nie Ching berkata laporan polis dibuat berhubung penyebaran video berkenaan yang didakwa berniat jahat dan berunsur fitnah. (Gambar Bernama)

- FMT

Mohon maaf tapi Fadhli harap isu sekolah vernakular calon PH ‘berterusan’

- FMT

KOTA BHARU: Two Orang Asli men were detained last Friday with 2,600 yaba pills, 29 litres of ketum juice and 25kg of ketum leaves.

The arrests were made under Ops Tapis Bersepadu, which started on April 17 and ended yesterday.

Kelantan police chief Zaki Harun said the duo were detained in a hut at Lubok Kasar Sungai Long in Batu Melintang, Jeli, here.

He said an initial investigation revealed that the suspects, aged 22 and 23, were supplying the drugs to oil palm plantation workers in and around the location.

“This is the first case of Orang Asli men being involved in drug distribution in Kelantan,” he said.

The suspects have been remanded for seven days from Saturday.

Zaki also said 1,036 suspects, including two civil servants, a student and 68 foreigners, were arrested during the operation for various drug-related offences.

Police also seized a variety of drugs, including yaba pills, heroin, marijuana, methamphetamine, erimin 5 pills, psychotropic pills, ketum leaves and ketum juice, worth about RM1.04 million.

In a follow-up operation, the General Operations Force seized two cars in Ketereh on Saturday and recovered 4,400 yaba pills. - FMT

Zambry wants full report from varsity over ‘bankrupt’ department head

Higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir wants the full details after netizens questioned the academic’s status. (Bernama pic)

PETALING JAYA: Higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir has ordered a public university to furnish a full report on an allegation that the head of a department under its medical faculty is a bankrupt.

“The ministry will not compromise on issues that involve the legitimacy (of the appointment) or any legal matters,” he said in a text message to FMT.

“I hope the university will prepare a complete report on the matter immediately.”

Zambry was asked to comment on a news report in which netizens questioned the appointment of the said individual to office in a public university despite being declared a bankrupt 10 years ago.

Questions about the academic’s status were raised on social media after the academic was interviewed by a news portal recently.

A search conducted with the insolvency department confirmed that the academic was declared a bankrupt in 2014 and remained undischarged as of Thursday.

On Saturday, a spokesman for the university said an investigation is being carried out and an announcement would be made today.

Several netizens also claimed they enrolled in a private medical university the academic had started some 10 years ago, which was later shut down, forcing the government to step in.

FMT is withholding the name of the institution and the academic pending an official response.

Two days ago, nephrologist Dr Rafidah Abdullah urged the public university to explain why it allowed the person to lead the said department.

Rafidah said the vice-chancellor of the university must explain the matter, especially since the government’s regulations bar bankrupts from being hired for the public services. - FMT

QSR confirms temporary closures of KFC outlets due to difficult economic conditions

QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd and KFC Malaysia have confirmed the temporary closures of their outlets.

KUALA LUMPUR: QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd and KFC Malaysia have confirmed the temporary closures of their outlets.

QSR today says it has taken proactive measures to temporarily close KFC Malaysia outlets, in response to challenging economic conditions.

This is a means to manage increasing business costs and to focus on high engagement trade zones, QSR added.

Nanyang Siang Pau earlier reported that as of April 27, QSR had temporarily closed 108 outlets across the country.

The report highlighted that Kelantan is the most affected, with nearly 80 per cent or up to 21 outlets suspended, followed by Johor with 15 outlets affected.

QSR said employees from the affected stores were offered the opportunity to relocate to operating stores as part of a tactical strategy to optimise resources in trade zones with higher customer engagement.

"Contributing positively to the Malaysian community, preserving the brand love for KFC and protecting employees of the brand are all priority to the organisation.

"Employees from affected outlets were offered the opportunity to relocate to busier operating stores as part of the company's re-optimisation efforts," it said in a statement today.

As a company that has been serving Malaysians for over 50 years, QSR Brands said the focus remains on providing quality products and services to customers, while contributing positively to the Malaysian economy through job security for 18,000 team members in Malaysia, of which about 85 per cent are Muslims.

"QSR Brands continue to be among the largest taxpayers in Malaysia and take pride in being able to give back to the community through KFC Add Hope and the Wakalah Zakat Fund.

"We firmly believe our rakyat will acknowledge our Malaysian roots, our sincerity and our hard work in contributing to the Malaysian ecosystem," it noted.

QSR operates more than 850 KFC restaurants across Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Cambodia.

It is also the franchisee of Pizza Hut in Malaysia and Singapore, with a network of over 500 restaurants and delivery concepts in both countries. - NST
