PETALING JAYA: A man, aged 50, died while being held in custody in Sarawak on Monday.
Director of Bukit Aman’s integrity and compliance department Azri Ahmad said the suspect had been detained under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
He said the detainee complained of chest pains and difficulty in breathing while being brought to the Marudi district police headquarters.
“The man was immediately brought to the Beluru clinic for treatment. The clinic assistant pronounced him dead at 10.30pm,” he said in a statement.
Azri said a post-mortem will be conducted at Miri Hospital to ascertain the cause of death.
He also said Bukit Aman’s death in custody investigation unit will carry out a probe.
Last week, it was reported that a 59-year-old man died while being held in custody at the Setiawangsa police station lockup.
Azri said the detainee’s cellmate found him struggling to breathe.
The man was brought to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for treatment, but was pronounced dead by a doctor from the hospital’s emergency and trauma department. - FMT
