Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s legal team is urging Attorney-General Idrus Harun to decide on the deputy prime minister’s bid for review over his ongoing corruption trial involving millions of ringgit from Yayasan Akalbudi.
In a media statement today, Zahid’s lawyers - Hisham Teh Poh Teik, Ahmad Zaidi Zainal, and Hamidi Mohd Noh - reminded that the letters of representations were sent to prosecutors on Dec 8 last year and Jan 25 this year.
“Until today, the defence has not received any reply from the Attorney-General (AG).
“Therefore, the defence seeks for the decision on the representation to be sped up before the defence calls even more witnesses to testify in the trial.
“The answer on the representation is urgently needed to save the cost and time for both parties.
“After the representation was sent, our client also had his statement recorded once more by MACC in June 2023,” they said.
The lawyers noted that it is normal and a right for anybody facing an ongoing criminal court case to send representation to the AG.
“Therefore, we believe it is unfair for any quarters to try to intervene and politicise the issue. Furthermore, our client who is an accused is currently exercising his right to send in the representation at this stage (of the trial),” the lawyers said.
Zahid’s (above) legal team also warned they would take legal action against any quarters who prejudices his rights in relation to the representation.
Under the law, a letter of representation is a method for an accused to seek prosecutors to review the criminal case against him, such as dropping the charges or for the accused to plead guilty to a lesser charge.
