KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to convene with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York next month.
The purpose of the meeting is to collaboratively address and combat Islamophobia on the global stage, following a telephonic conversation between the leaders earlier this month.
Anwar's remarks came during the 63rd Malaysia International Al-Quran Recital and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA63) opening ceremony, where he emphasised the urgency of united efforts against Islamophobia.
"Inshallah, I will meet with the Turkiye president in New York next month to discuss follow-up solutions and ways to tackle Islamophobia."
The leaders' conversation highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to counter attacks on Islam, especially in regions such as the United States and Europe.
In his speech during an event in Permatang Pauh early this month, Anwar revealed that Malaysia and Turkiye would cooperate to tackle Islamophobia on the global stage.
Erdogan was reported to have proposed a collaborative endeavour to spearhead a movement to counter negative narratives about Islam.
Anwar responded affirmatively, stating they would develop a working paper and subsequent discussions to solidify the initiative. - NST
