DAP ex-MP questions PAS sincerity on non-Muslim rights

Former Klang MP Charles Santiago questioned PAS’ sincerity in assuring it would not marginalise non-Muslims if the party wins the six state elections.

The DAP leader took to social media to cite a series of ‘Islamisation’ practices in states PAS administers, especially Kelantan and Terengganu.

“How do you explain compounding a Chinese woman for wearing shorts in public?

“There are no cinemas in Kelantan. You force your idea of ‘haram’ on the non-Malays and won’t allow for cinemas just because you believe moviegoers who are unrelated shouldn’t sit together,” Charles (above) wrote.

The scenario is not any better in Terengganu, he added, noting the segregated seating for men and women in the state’s cinemas.

He further cited gender segregation enforced in unisex hair salons in Terengganu, which include those run by the non-Malays.

“There has been a push from PAS to mainstream political Islam. The cinema drama, ban on unisex hair salons, and display of alcohol encroach into the rights of non-Malays.

“What guarantee is there that PAS won’t impose Islamic values on everyone given the examples above? Especially if it captures the federal government at the next polls?”

Charles was responding to the remark by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang that the non-Malays, especially those in Penang, will not be marginalised if the Islamist party wins in the Aug 12 state elections.

“Non-Malays, don’t be afraid. Don’t worry, Islam promotes justice and fairness. Malays are great people.

“In Kelantan and Terengganu, the Chinese and Indians live happily in the Malay villages,” China Press quoted Hadi as saying at a Perikatan Nasional ceramah in Penang on Tuesday night. - Mkini
