Former Selangor executive council member Teng Chang Khim has criticised two PKR lawmakers for supporting those who opposed the Batu Arang incinerator project in the state.
According to the DAP veteran, Selayang MP William Leong and Rawang assemblyperson Chua Wei Kiat were “populists who ruined the plan”.
Taking to Facebook, Teng (above) mocked the pair as “people’s heroes” and claimed that their knowledge of technology and public service “remained stuck in the 1970s”.
He said it is counterproductive for ruling federal and state lawmakers to resort to rallying the people and protesting without understanding the matter or communicating through internal channels.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Chua said he respected Teng’s stand but pointed out that every project has its pros and cons.
The assemblyperson said he is concerned that the incinerator could affect the living conditions of his constituents.
Chua said he has raised this issue numerous times in the state assembly as well.
"We are not against this incinerator, but our stand is that you must find a suitable location.
"If they (other legislators) feel this facility is good, we welcome them to move this incinerator to their constituencies instead of having it in my constituency," he added.
Understanding tech and safety
Meanwhile, the Rawang Tolak Incinerator Network argued that even the latest technology cannot ensure the safety of residents or prevent pollution.
It also invited Teng to visit the proposed site to see how close the incinerator is located to residential areas and schools.
However, Teng said those opposing the project should meet with representatives of the government to understand the plan first before protesting.
"It's about understanding technology first. Is this facility, this specification, capable of addressing the issues (of concern)?" he told Malaysiakini.
The former Bandar Baru Klang MP said explanations should be sought from the government and experts instead of making judgements based on a few reports.
As for Chua, Teng said the former should understand how an assemblyperson is supposed to handle matters.
He said Chua could contact the various government units for information and even request to visit countries where such incinerators are in place. - Mkini
