'Dropping Zahid's case will be last nail in Umno's coffin' - PAS Youth chief

STATE POLLS | A Perikatan Nasional (PN) leader has indicated that there may be new developments in the court case faced by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

PN Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari claimed rumours are circulating that the latest development may involve Zahid’s case being dropped.

“There are rumours that tomorrow (today), there will be a new development in the case involving the Umno president. We want to say it tonight (last night) before it happens tomorrow (today), so it if happens then our guess is amazing.

“If it is true that the charges against Zahid are dropped, it will be the last nail in Umno’s coffin,” Ahmad Fadhli said in a ceramah at Kok Lanas, Kota Bharu in Kelantan last night.

Also present were PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, former Ketereh MP Annuar Musa, PN’s Kok Lanas candidate Mohamed Farid Zawawi and PN’s Kadok candidate Azami Mohd Nor.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court has said there has yet to be a decision on the representation sent by Zahid to drop the 47 charges of criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering involving Yayasan Akalbudi (YAB) funds.

Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) trial and appeal division chief Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said the AGC is still awaiting the results of further investigations from the MACC’s special task force regarding the new evidence presented by the defence counsel.

“A special task force is conducting an investigation. There has not been any decision about the investigation,” he said during the case hearing in front of Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah, now a Court of Appeal judge.

Zahid, 70, the deputy prime minister, had submitted a representation of over 200 pages to Attorney-General Idrus Harun as the basis for considering dropping the charges against him.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Fadhli, also the Pasir Mas MP, said they would await the development because there are all kinds of possibilities with a government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“We’ll see how it goes but there is no counting on the current PMX (Anwar) government. All sorts could happen.

“He can say there is no meddling in court issues, there is no meddling in prosecutions. This is PMX, the fastest-spinning washing machine, a new PMX brand that will ‘spoil’ easily,” he said. - Mkini
