Fadhlina denies claims of delayed school repairs in Sarawak

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has denied the government is not keeping up with its promises to fund and repair dilapidated schools in Sarawak.

She said her ministry regularly meets with the Sarawak state government to discuss the ongoing progress of school repairs.

“We are holding many meetings with the Sarawak state government, and there will be more meetings from time to time.

“…We will communicate with each other to ensure that all progress for dilapidated schools is carried out successfully,” she told reporters after attending the Merdeka Exploration Programme at Muzium Negara, Kuala Lumpur, today.

Fadhlina was responding to a claim by Deputy Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Juanda Jaya, who stated that the federal government has failed to fulfil its promises to rebuild dilapidated schools in Sarawak.

Juanda posted on Facebook two days ago lamenting that the education ministry has yet to initiate any renovations ever since Budget 2023 provided nearly RM1 billion to improve dilapidated schools nationwide.

“I don't know when the ministry wants to rebuild the schools… RM1 billion was given (for dilapidated schools) a long time ago.

“We want our students to progress but we have not progressed to provide the most basic facilities,” Juanda said.

Previously, Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg also decried the education ministry’s “delay” with the state’s dilapidated schools.

According to FMT, Abang Johari mentioned the state had to use its funds to rebuild schools, claiming that the ministry only talked about improvements without taking action.

He added that he has asked the ministry for updates on the funding but stated that his requests went unheard. - Mkini
