PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the authorities to keep an eye out for vote-buying ahead of the Aug 12 state elections.
According to Bernama, Zahid said rivals to BN and Pakatan Harapan have been “quiet” and have not been conducting their campaigning out in the open.
“I’m afraid they will use last-minute strategies. They could be up to something, such as ‘charity’ activities.
“We want election candidates to win democratically and to lose democratically,” he was quoted as saying, before urging the police, Election Commission (EC) and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to be vigilant for such practices.
Previously, Zahid had been accused by Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman of “normalising corruption” after allocating funds to the youths in Terengganu before urging those attending a function to vote for BN and PH.
The Umno president brushed off Syed Saddiq’s claim, saying all youths require sufficient funding to carry out activities, whether at the district, state or national levels.
MACC chief Azam Baki also said Zahid’s remarks were not an offence since these grants were government initiatives.
However, anti-graft group the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) urged MACC to probe Zahid over his promises to determine whether an election offence had been committed. - FMT
