AMPANG: DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook warns that Putrajaya will fall into Perikatan Nasional’s hands if Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional fail to retain Selangor in the Aug 12 polls.
“This state polls isn’t just about retaining the Selangor state government but also about ensuring Anwar Ibrahim remains as the prime minister,” he said at PH-BN’s grand finale ceramah here tonight.
“Someone in Gombak had said if PN wins (Selangor), the following day Putrajaya will topple. So I am asking you, ladies and gentlemen, to win in Selangor to retain Putrajaya,” he added, drawing cheers from the 5,000-strong crowd.
Previously, Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan said the outcome of the six state elections would not affect the position of the federal government since the government bloc comprised 148 MPs in the Dewan Rakyat.
The Pontian MP said this in response to rumours that the current government will be overthrown following the state elections on Saturday.
Electoral watchdog Bersih had also said the state polls should not be viewed as a referendum on the Anwar-led federal government.
However, political analysts said the outcome of the state elections will indicate the acceptance of the unity coalition and its policies among voters, and will be an indirect referendum on Anwar. - FMT
