Malacca PKR leader upset party has no non-Malay excos

Malacca PKR treasurer Gue Teck has expressed disappointment over the party’s lack of diversity in recent state executive council appointments.

Notably, he alleged that PKR had not nominated any non-Malays for exco positions in Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

PKR state assemblypersons appointed to exco posts in Penang and Selangor were all Malay, while Negeri Sembilan’s state cabinet has yet to be sworn in.

“Since PKR led Selangor in 2008, this is the first time there are no Chinese or Indian leaders from the party nominated for exco positions,” Gue said in a statement yesterday.

“The method for choosing exco members this time appears as though it is trying to sideline the spirit of diversity which has been celebrated by the party all this while.

“An explanation and review is needed to test whether PKR is a truly multiracial party,” he also said.

Gue posited that one reason why PKR had not nominated non-Malays for exco posts was due to heightened racial and religious sentiments played up by PAS and Perikatan Nasional.

He also said it could be the result of PKR giving up one exco seat in Selangor to Umno.

“The question is why was diversity in the party given up?” he asked.

He also dismissed the notion that no Chinese or Indian PKR assemblypersons in Pakatan Harapan-controlled states were capable of holding the posts.

Yesterday, former PKR deputy secretary-general P Jenapala exited the party over similar reasons and claimed Indians were being sidelined in PKR. - Mkini
