MCMC says guided by CMA, 'no comment' on cases under probe

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has maintained that it is guided by provisions of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 in carrying out a wide range of functions.

MCMC said its functions include preventing the commission or attempted commission of an offence under any written law of the country.

"MCMC is also obligated to assist other law enforcement agencies in enforcing the laws under their purview," said MCMC's corporate communications said in a statement tonight.

"Upon taking any actions required, the matters will be subjected to investigation including those performed by any other law enforcement agencies.

"Therefore, the commission will not be in a position to comment until the conclusion of the said cases," it added.

The statement did not make references to the said cases.

Earlier today, two individuals - former three-term Wangsa Maju MP Wee Choo Keong and Twitter user Salim Iskandar - accused the MCMC of not following due process in carrying out its functions.

They also accused MCMC of only acting upon instructions from the police, rather than undertaking its own evaluation on whether to enforce a block or otherwise.

Wee argued that he was denied his rights to natural justice when the MCMC had without prior notification blocked access to his site last month.

Meanwhile, Salim said the MCMC on Wednesday blocked two of his mobile phone numbers without prior notice, more than a month after he faced police investigations over tweets satirising Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Media freedom advocates have since called for greater transparency from MCMC over website blockings following its decision to cut off public access to UtusanTV. - Mkini
